  1. 8.  James CONSTANTINE was born 27 Aug 1758, Grinton, Yorkshire (North Riding), England (son of James CONSTANTINE and Elizabeth TAYLOR); died 23 Dec 1829, Newport, Hants, Nova Scotia, Canada.

    Notes:

    James was licensed to teach school under the Act of 1811;
    -listed in the 1817 census as head of a household of six (1 English and 5 NS).
    Children: Catherine b. 20 Jan. 1793; James b.ca. 1794; Pharez J.;
    William; Elizabeth; Rhoda.

    There was a James Constantine, son of James Constantine in Grinton, North Yorkshire (only a few miles from Marske) baptized 27 Aug 1758 (Source is the registers of the parish church of Grinton in Swaledale, Co. York).
    This would add further weight to the likelihood that Simon Ward and James Constantine b. abt 1757 knew each other before coming to Nova Scotia.
    If this is the correct James Constantine, then his father, James (of Reeth), died 2 Jan 1793. His parents may be the James Constantine and Elizabeth Taylor 'of Thoralby' who married at Aysgarth 5 Sep 1744. They had a son William 06 Mar 1747, Aysgarth, then in Grinton, James 1758, Thomas 26 Apr 1761, Pegge 23 Sep 1764. There are large gaps between these births though, so not sure what happened there!

    In Hawes, just in the adjoining Dale to the south of Marske (18 miles) there is a James Constantine baptized 30 Jan 1757, son of John Constantine of Burterset. (however further digging revealed this James died in 1769 - says son of John of Burterset)

    Also, from same source is this entry for 1774 (before James Constantine would have left England):
    Mannuel Barker, par. of Watlass, & Eliz Constantine, par. of Grinton, by banns, 25 Nov., by Richard Home, rect of Marske. Wit: James Constantine, Eliz Merrall

    There may have been other Constantine families in the immediate vicinity. In Hawes, we find in the church accounting records:
    1734 To James Constantine for a Bellroap - 1/2d

    There was also a James Constantine, son of James Constantine baptized April 23, 1753, Leeds, Call Lane Chapel (Arian Independent)
    Although this one is a little early to be the right James. But his headstone did say he was 'from Leeds, Yorkshire'. However this doesn't necessarily mean he was born there.

    There was a Constantine (no first name given) enlisted on the British Royal Navy Ship 'Royal Oak', mustered 1780. This ship was in the 'Battle of the Chesapeake' during the War of Independance. Could be a connection to Simon Ward who enlisted the year before on the ship 'Daphne', also used during the war of independence.

    Died:
    buried St.James Anglican Cemetery, Brooklyn, N.S.
    Headstone says 'from Leeds Yorkshire'.
    Note: Even if James was born in Grinton, it could very well have been common to name the nearest large city when saying where someone was from. Or James could have moved to Leeds as a young man to obtain work or join the British military.

    James married Elizabeth MOSHER Abt 1790, Newport, Hants, Nova Scotia, Canada. Elizabeth (daughter of James MOSHER and Lydia ALLEN) was born 1772, Newport, Hants, Nova Scotia, Canada; died 28 Jun 1852, Newport, Hants, Nova Scotia, Canada. [Group Sheet]

  2. 9.  Elizabeth MOSHER was born 1772, Newport, Hants, Nova Scotia, Canada (daughter of James MOSHER and Lydia ALLEN); died 28 Jun 1852, Newport, Hants, Nova Scotia, Canada.

    Notes:

    Exerpt from the Newport Township Book:
    In Oct of 1789 Barzillai Mosher (probably Elizabeth's brother) was complaining that Elizabeth Mosher, singlewoman, was pregnant and that she had named James Constantine as the father. He was apprehended and did not contest this. Later, in January, 1790, after Elizabeth had given birth to a bastard son on Jan 12 or 13, as she refused to nurse or care for the child, arrangements were made for James to repay some expenses and pay child support.
    The above child would have been Pharez J.

    Children:
    1. Pharez J. CONSTANTINE was born 1790, Newport, Hants, Nova Scotia, Canada; died 1841; was buried 1841, Elgin, Westmoreland, New Brunswick, Canada.
    2. Catherine CONSTANTINE was born 20 Jan 1793, Newport, Hants, Nova Scotia, Canada; died 22 Mar 1875, Newport, Hants, Nova Scotia, Canada.
