| 1371 | Charlotte’s obituary appears in the Bridgetown Monitor of 17 March 1915, page 4 and reads “Obituary - Mrs. Charlotte Augusta Troop-Longley - On February 27th, in Paradise, N.S., at the home of her son Harry, Mrs. Charlotte Augusta Troop-Longley passed peacefully away in the 86th year of her age after a short illness of acute bronchitis. Her father was the late W.H. Troop of Nictaux, N.S. For twenty-nine years she has been the widow of the late Avard Longley who for several years represented Annapolis County in the Local and Dominion Parliaments both before and after Confederation. Mrs. Longley was a strong character. Her intellectual qualities were rare for her day; her mind was well stored with knowledge culled from the choicest fields. This well cultivated mind never ceased to assimilate the best in literature even to the last. Having been shut in for years we began to think of her as belonging mostly to the past, but only a few weeks before her death, she surprised the Literary Society by sending a paper on “Lessons from nature, or Outdoor Religion.” This paper would have reflected credit on any of our younger and more highly favored generation had they written it. In her younger life she attained marked proficiency in music. To these qualifications were added an activity and resourcefulness that made her a leader of both old and young in her church and the community. Her personality was of such a dignified and yet modest character that, when in her society you instinctively felt yourself in the presence of royalty. Such exalted conceptions, such noble ideals, such purity of thought, aim and motive, made her a force in formulating the morals of the community. Of a family of six, four survive to mourn their loss, namely: Harry and Howard of Paradise, and Annie S. And Mrs. T.R. Wallace of Wolfville. Her funeral took place at the home of her son on March 1st. The services were conducted by Rev. S.D. MacLeod who took for his text Phil. IV, 3: Whose names are written in the book of life. He was assisted by Rev. A.M. McNintch and J.H. Balcom. The last respects were paid to the departed by a large gathering of sympathizing friends.” | TROOP, Charlotte Augusta (I16633)

| 1377 | Christian Messenger - Wednesday, 26 March 1856 - Page 101 -Mrs. John Newcomb -Died, at her son’s residence, Cornwallis, on the 17th January last, after a distressing illness of more than three years, Rebecca, widow of the late John Newcomb, in the sixty-fourth year of her age. In early life our departed sister was brought by Divine grace to experience a happy interest in Christ, and though young, knew the joy and peace of such as make the Lord their trust. To her there was joy and peace in believing. Years passed on, youth glided into maturity – maturity into age. But amid years and change, and the loss of a beloved husband, the principles of the Gospel comforted and cheered her – her well grounded hope failed not – her prospect of heaven faded not from the eye of faith – Christ was her portion and her all; and by God’s grace she continued even to the end a humble and devoted disciple of the Saviour. During a protracted and painful illness, she felt almost constantly the comforting presence of the Lord, and with much satisfaction and profit enjoyed the prayers and conversation of christian friends who visited her. Such seasons were profitable to the visitor – they saw in a diseased and suffering sister the triumphs of grace, and the assurance of a complete victory over the last enemy. Her final departure was sudden, but in peace, the spirit having done with time ascended to its home in the bosom of a triumphant and glorified church. Seven children mourn their loss, but they rejoice that she whom they loved is amid the blood-washed family in heaven. May they all be fitted by the same Divine instrumentality to meet where their union shall be forever with the Lord.– Com. for the C.M., March 1, 1856. Note - She was Rebecca Pineo, the daughter of David Pineo by his wife Rebecca West. She married Barnaby Newcomb 07 February 1810, who died 29 November 1821, and secondly his brother John Newcomb. That would make her a sister to Gibbs Pineo, my ancestor. | PINEO, Rebecca West (I19386)

| 1379 | Christian Messenger – Thursday, 11 May 1854 – Page 147 –Died – At Cornwallis, on the 27th of March, after an illness of four days, Mr. David Newcomb, aged 70 years. Mr. Newcomb was extensively known and esteemed, and in his bereavement his family and friends have sustained a loss, that will be long felt. For fifteen years Mr. Newcomb was a professor of religion, during which time he continued to enjoy the hope and consolations of the gospel; but especially during the last two years he manifested an entire resignation to the will of the Lord. His hope was strong, his faith active, and he waited the time of his departure. In his last hour, when asked by a friend about to pray, “For what he should especially petition the lord,” answered, “That His will might be done.” Thus faith triumphed and he departed to be with Christ. A widow and ten children mourn their loss. As several of the family are in the U.S. it is requested that New York papers copy the above. – Communicated.April 25, 1854 | NEWCOMB, David (I19384)
