| 2303 | In his will of 1809, Robert McGowan names 'his trusty friend John Stuart Esquire and son in law Robert Berry' as his executors. Of note is that Stephen Read, in his will, describes his property as bordering that of John Stuart Esquire. The Robert McGowan family is included in the 1770 Amherst census as follows 1 man, 1 woman, 2 boys, 4 girls, all Protestant, 1 American, 7 Irish. This pattern is similar to that of most of the "Hopewell" immigrants who settled in the Amherst area. Robert McGowan was also included in the 1791 census for Amherst, N.S. as follows: 1 man, 1 underage male, 3 of age females. Robert was elected to the Town Officer position "Assessor" in 1792 and "Surveyor" in 1793. He was known as Robert The Elder, a reference to the family's strong ties to the Presbyterian Church situated at Amherst Point in the early 1790's (the first in Cumberland Co.). | MCGOWAN, Robert (I2970)
