2454 Interesting tidbit:
The Croscup Room, as it is now known originally was the main parlour in the Hall-Croscup House situated at Karsdale, Nova Scotia, on the north shore of the Annapolis Basin a few miles west of Annapolis Royal. About 1846-1848 this room was painted by an unidentified artist for William Croscup and his wife, Hannah Amelia Shaffner, with a remarkable group of scenic wall murals executed in oil and graphite on plaster and set within a wooden architectural framework decorated in simulated marble and fine wood grains. Although academically untrained, the Croscup artist was evidently a knowledgeable designer. The decorative scheme of the room, featuring eleven distinct but related painted wall panels, was conceived with careful consideration of the form and function of the space. In scale and narrative effect the Croscup murals resemble early 19th-century large-scale, block print scenic wallpapers for which they provided a less expensive substitute. Yet while directly or indirectly inspired by such patterned wallpapers, the murals are unique in content and style. Varying in degree of realism and formal accomplishment, they depict different European and local Maritime subjects, incorporating scenes of contemporary life painted after wood engravings from the "Illustrated London News" with remembered and purely imaginary images. Recognized today as one of the outstanding examples of Pre-Confederation Canadian interior decorative painting, the Croscup Room was acquired by the National Gallery of Canada in 1976 complete with painted walls, floor, fireplace, doors, windows and architectural trim.

2465 It is by a process of elimination that the family of Caroline Ward has been established.
Firstly, the will of Simon Ward of Newport, Nova Scotia contains the following:
"It is my will that my Grand Daughter Caroline Ward do have one ewe sheep and the increase of the same until after my decease and one feather bed one feather bolster two feather pillow two blankets three coverlets and one small chest and one high post bedstead to be giving her by my executors when she is eighteen years old."

None of Simon's sons had a daughter named Caroline, so she must be a daughter of one of his daughters and born out of wedlock. The only one old enough to bear a child in 1821 would be Lucillia who later married Tonge Mosher about 1824.

November 23, 2018. It has now been proven by DNA match with another descendent that this is the same Caroline Ward who married Edward King.

2467 It is possible that this is the James born 8 Feb 1767 in Kirkby-Ravensworth Yorkshire to George Ward and ___, since that is where his son James ends up living and dying. Source (S1266)

2468 It is possible that this is the Robert Berry who bought a house at 'Bible Hill' in 1812 from a David Archibald. (Historical and Genealogical Record of Colchester) BERRY, Robert (I2352)

2469 It is possible that this Margaret is somehow connected to Thomas Ward who had a daughter Jeney Ward born in 1797. The record says Jeney, daughter of Thomas Ward of Marrick. Since Margaret and her husband James Cooper are the toll gate keepers at Marrick in the 1841 and 1851 censuses, it makes sense. WARD, Margaret (I7490)

2470 It is with extremely heavy hearts that the family announce the passing of Grant Northup on Thursday, March 2, 2023, at the age of 82, in Dykeland Lodge, Windsor. Born in Stanley, he was a son of the late Roy and Esther (Ward) Northup.
Grant worked for many years at Palmers and Ettinger's Saw Mills. Later, he and his wife, Irene, moved to Ontario but moved back home six months later to be near their families.
Grant had many other jobs over the years but retired from the Town of Windsor after 19 years of dedicated service. He was very particular on appearances, especially his yard and you could see him out doing something in his yard every day. Grant loved spending time with his family, the grandchildren and great- grandchildren always put a smile on his face and laughter in his heart. Some of Grant's other passions were painting, washer toss, country music, animals, apple pie, going for trips to Tim Hortons, Fords and his Montreal Canadiens.
He is survived by his wife of over 55 years, Irene; son, Michael (Delores); daughters, Grace (Roy) and Pamela (Mitch); grandchildren, Tamara (Gordon), Austin, Shane (Kate), Cody (Hannah), Christian (Julia) and great-grandchildren, Logan, Athena, Braunwynn, Norah and Lena; brothers, Eric (Joyce), Howard (Debbie) and Garnet, sisters, Marguerite (Ron) and Marie (John); and several nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, Grant was predeceased by son, Dean; brothers, Harold, Irving and Claude; sisters, Geraldine and Flossie.
The family wishes to thank the staff at Dykeland Lodge for the care and comfort they had given to Grant.

2471 It is with heartfelt sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Harriett M. “Haddie” Smith of Windsor, at the age of 96, on Monday, January 18, 2021, in Hants Community Hospital, Windsor. Born in Sweets Corner, Hants Co., she lived in Windsor most of her life. She was a daughter of the late Howard and Alice (McLeod) Barker and she was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

Haddie enjoyed going to the family cottage at Cockscomb Lake, going on camping trips and especially operating Smith's Corner Grocery for 16 years, where local children enjoyed getting “penny candy”. She volunteered at Dykeland Lodge and had a real love of attending to her flower gardens.

She is survived by her son, Gary (Carol Hale) and daughter, Heather Fletcher, all of Windsor; granddaughter, Kathleen Smith (Luke Campbell), Ottawa; Katrina (Andrew) Rogers, Windsor; grandsons, Jason (Lori) Smith, Sackville; Adrian Moore, Windsor and Jeffrey (Diane) Fletcher, Cape Breton; six great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

Haddie was predeceased by her husband, Gilbert "Gil"; daughter, Diane in infancy; brother, Howard Barker; and sisters, Lillian Phillips and Ruby Crouse.

2472 It is with heavy hearts and deep sadness that we, the family, announce the sudden passing of Robert Wayne Cann on Monday, Aug. 16, 2010, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, surrounded by his loving family.Born in Sydney, he was the son of Lillian (Ward) Cann, Sydney and the late Seward Cann. For 22 years, Wayne was employed with Mason's Wholesale and before retirement, drove transport trucks for Midland, Global and Hillmans. He was an avid tarabish player, lover of antique cars and a loyal friend. He will be missed.Surviving are his wife, Louise (Lund); daughter, Susan (Lee) Carrigan; two grandchildren, Kyle and Nickolas. He is also survived by his sister, Judith Grant; niece, Melissa Grant (Ken LeBlanc); nephew, Ryan Grant.Visitation will take place at Sydney Memorial Chapel on Thursday 1-3 p.m., followed by a service in the chapel, with Pastor Kevin Richardson officiating. 2474 It seems incredible that a 14 yr old Barbara would marry a 58 yr old man, but that seems to be the case since he died only 4 years later. Maybe it was a marriage of convenience. DAVISON, Jonathan (I15417)

2475 It seems likely that Martha was adopted by the Urquhart family of Five Islands. BROWN, Martha M (I932)

2476 It seems that Irene's parents were living in Yarmouth for some reason in 1924 and maybe Irene needed to register for school and they didn't have proof of birth. Since Irene's birth in Sydney was registered with the name Hazel Ward, they couldn't find it in the files, so Harry and Maggie had to register the birth in Yarmouth, where we find a second birth registration, only this time under Irene Hazel Ward. Source (S182)

2477 It was at Olive's home in Avondale that Amy (Emetine) Ward, my gr gr gr grandmother was living when she died. WARD, Olive (I657)

2478 It's possible that this Edward is a son of a first wife of Edward named Mary. There is a Halifax marriage record for an Edward King in 1878, age 25, born in England, who gives his parents as Edward and Mary. His bride is 17 year old Sarah A. Boutilier, daughter of David
Edward King Sr. could have married a Mary in England and had a son Edward in 1853 and then came to Halifax, (as a soldier perhaps?). Mary then died and he married Caroline.
KING, Edward (I6145)

2479 It's quite possible that his first name was Marmaduke.
1. His son Walter names his first son Marmaduke.
2. There was a Marmaduke Ward living in 1542 (possibly died that year). He is listed among expenditures for the St. Peter and Wilfrid Church in Ripon for 1541-2:
Crist. Marshall pro libera firma ten. sui debiti ad festum Sci Marci Evang. anno Domini millesimo quingentesimo quadragesimo, 6s Crist. Dragley 5s., Katrinam Broune,1 6s. 8d., Joh. Yonge, 20d., Joh. Sober capellanum, 6s. 8d., Marmaducum Ward, 6s. 8d., Stephanum Whitfeld, 6s. 8d., Joh. Dragley,
6s. 8d. In toto, 46s. 8d. [OcZ.]
WARD, Marmaduke? (I7876)

2480 It's unusual, but there are civil birth records for her as both Muriel F. Ward and Muriel F. Wilkinson, both registered in 3rd quarter 1922, with mother's maiden name as Ward. So, I'm going to go with the assumption that this birth took place before the marriage of John and Jane, but that John Wilkinson was the father of the child. Source (S1185)

2481 Item can be found in Registration Year: 1909 - Book: 10 - Page: 28 - Number: 167 although there is an obvious error in his age as it says "age 25". Impossible since his father died in 1881.Headstone in Maplewood Cemetery Source (S38)

occupation was millwright.
"On 12 October 1758, Goveror Charles Lawrence issued a proclamation
to the people of New England inviting them to settle the fertile Nova
Scotian farmland that had lain vacant since the Acadian deportation.
By 1768, approximately 8,000 New Englanders, known as the 'Planters',
had made the move. In the process, Nova Scotia was permanently
transformed." (Media Plan Concept, Parks Canada)

2500 James was licensed to teach school under the Act of 1811;
-listed in the 1817 census as head of a household of six (1 English and 5 NS).
Children: Catherine b. 20 Jan. 1793; James b.ca. 1794; Pharez J.;
William; Elizabeth; Rhoda.

There was a James Constantine, son of James Constantine in Grinton, North Yorkshire (only a few miles from Marske) baptized 27 Aug 1758 (Source is the registers of the parish church of Grinton in Swaledale, Co. York).
This would add further weight to the likelihood that Simon Ward and James Constantine b. abt 1757 knew each other before coming to Nova Scotia.
If this is the correct James Constantine, then his father, James (of Reeth), died 2 Jan 1793. His parents may be the James Constantine and Elizabeth Taylor 'of Thoralby' who married at Aysgarth 5 Sep 1744. They had a son William 06 Mar 1747, Aysgarth, then in Grinton, James 1758, Thomas 26 Apr 1761, Pegge 23 Sep 1764. There are large gaps between these births though, so not sure what happened there!

In Hawes, just in the adjoining Dale to the south of Marske (18 miles) there is a James Constantine baptized 30 Jan 1757, son of John Constantine of Burterset. (however further digging revealed this James died in 1769 - says son of John of Burterset)

Also, from same source is this entry for 1774 (before James Constantine would have left England):
Mannuel Barker, par. of Watlass, & Eliz Constantine, par. of Grinton, by banns, 25 Nov., by Richard Home, rect of Marske. Wit: James Constantine, Eliz Merrall

There may have been other Constantine families in the immediate vicinity. In Hawes, we find in the church accounting records:
1734 To James Constantine for a Bellroap - 1/2d

There was also a James Constantine, son of James Constantine baptized April 23, 1753, Leeds, Call Lane Chapel (Arian Independent)
Although this one is a little early to be the right James. But his headstone did say he was 'from Leeds, Yorkshire'. However this doesn't necessarily mean he was born there.

There was a Constantine (no first name given) enlisted on the British Royal Navy Ship 'Royal Oak', mustered 1780. This ship was in the 'Battle of the Chesapeake' during the War of Independance. Could be a connection to Simon Ward who enlisted the year before on the ship 'Daphne', also used during the war of independence.

CONSTANTINE, James (I230)
