| 3351 | O’Neill, Paul Francis, 80 years, of Dartmouth, passed from his earthly home to his heavenly home on January 4, 2016. Born in Halifax, he was the eldest son of the late Henry and Helen (Egan) O’Neill. Paul started his schooling at Sir John Thompson, Halifax, but when the family moved to Yarmouth, N.S., where he grew up and developed a love for playing the piano, he attended St. Ambrose School and Yarmouth High. He subsequently graduated with a diploma in Engineering and a Bachelor of Science from St. Mary’s University, Halifax. His main working years (29) were as a Mathematical Technician at the Defence Research Establishment Atlantic, where he enjoyed playing Santa each year at the Christmas Staff party. Paul was a musician at heart, interested in learning and an avid reader. He was a lover of wheels, bicycles, motorcycles (of which he had many) and trucks. He liked his sailboat as well. He leaves to miss his company, three sisters, Maureen, Sister of Charity, Gail and Carol Anne, one brother Garry and his wife Eileen Hornby and their children Jennifer O’Neill (husband Michael Wick)and their son Wylder, Los Angeles, California; Laurie O’Neill (husband Allan Shaw), Mooretown, Ontario and their children Joey and Heidi who sent many letters and drawings to cheer Paul during his illness; Brendan O’Neill, London, Ontario, who had a great connection with his uncle Paul. Three first cousins, Eileen Mackintosh (Gage), Helen Taylor and Ken Dunsworth (Diane). Visitation will be at Dartmouth Funeral Home, 29 Queen Street, Thursday 2-5 pm. Mass of Christian burial will be Friday 11 am at Saint John XXIII Roman Catholic Church, Colby Village. Father Irek Bem, celbrant. Reception to follow in church hall, with burial at Gate of Heaven Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to the Water Project of the Sisters of Charity Advancement, Sisters of Charity Center, 215 Seton Road, Halifax, N.S. B3H 0C9, or a charity of your choice. | 3365 | Parish burial record: John Ward, Parish Clerk for between 13 and 14 years buried. Here is an article I found regarding parish clerks of that time period:"They should be at least 20 years old, and known to the parson "as a man of honest conversation and sufficient for his reading, writing and competent skill in singing" Canon 91 (1603). Functions - reading the lessons and epistles, singing in the choir, giving out the hymns, leading the responses, serving at the altar and other like duties, opening of the church, ringing the bell, digging graves if there be no sexton. The role of Sexton is usually combined in country parishes. They are the sacristan, the keeper of holy things relating to divine service. Responsible for the care of the church, vestments and vessels, keeping the church clean, ringing bells, opening/closing doors, digging graves and care of the churchyard". | Source (S388)

| 3368 | Parish record at St. James Anglican, Newport says:"Mrs. Ward aged 80 years was buried in St. James Churchyard this 26th day of Aug. 1870 by me Henry ____"The actual Nova Scotia death record says: "Emily Ward" age 78, Widow, born Newport, father Nicholas Mosher, died August 18, 1870, Avondale, old age. Informant, J.B. Miller, registered/signed in Avondale. That would be John Barzillai Miller, the husband of her daughter Elizabeth Jane. She was buried with her husband in the Old St. James Burying Ground, Newport, Nova Scotia. The headstone incorrectly says she died in 1868, but her actual death record is 1870 (the headstone must have been engraved years later and the year was from someone's memory). When she died she was living in Avondale at the home of her neice, Olive Miller (daughter of Increase Ward and her sister Abigail (Mosher). | MOSHER, Emetine (Amy) (I380)
