Hundreds of Mourners at Marske Man's Funeral
The weather conditions did not deter hundreds of mourners from attending the funeral at Marske, Swaledale of Mr Joseph Fawcett (64) of Manor House, whose death was reported last week. The smaII church of St. Edmund's could not accommodate the greater part of the mourners many of whom had come from all parts of the Dale and Richmondshire. The remains were conveyed from the farm on a horse-drawn farm wagon, and the bearers Messrs J. Fawcett S. Fawcett, J. Dixon, A. Metcalfe, J. R. Langstaff, and R. Constantine, were nephews of the deceased. Members of the Lennox Lodge of Freemasons and the Royal Arch Chapter; Richmond and the Thorn-borough Lodge Leyburn of which deceased was a member, lined up on each side of the entrance to the Churchyard as the cortege arrived and they headed the procession to the graveside. Rev. W. Steel, vicar, officiated at the service in the church and at the gravesite. The Masonic brethren, led by the Rev. B. W. Crawford, vicar of Crakehall and Chaplan to the Beresford Pierse Lodge of Freemasons, Bedale. paid tribute with their brief service and each member filed past the grave into which were dropped sprigs of mimosa. FORMER POSTMISSTRESS of REETH
Death of Miss Margaret Ward
The death at Reeth Post Office of the former postmistress, Miss Margaret Ward, aged 73, recalls the family's long association with that post office. The work there has been carried on by members of the Ward family without a break since 1868. It was in that year that Miss Ward's father, Mr. Thomas Ward, was appointed postmaster and Miss Ward helped in the work from being a child. Reeth was one of the first offices in the area to have telegraph facilities. They were provided there in 1870 and Miss Ward learned the working of the system when she was about ten years old.
On her father's death in 1879 her brother, the late Mr. J.T. Ward, became postmaster and with the exception of about a year when another brother, the late Mr. Ralph Ward, was postmaster, he held the position until 1902. He resigned in that year and Miss Ward, who had been his assistant, was appointed postmistress. Whe she retired a year or two ago her nephew, Mr. T.E. Porter, became postmaster. Miss Ward is to be buried at Grinton tomorrow.

3572 Provincial Wesleyan - Wednesday, 25 October 1871 - Page 4 -Obituary -Miss Sarah A. Bond, of Rawdon -In early life Miss Bond was attracted toward the matter of personal religion under the labours of the Methodist ministers who then visited Rawdon.; but the instrumentality rendered effectual in leading her to decision in regard to service to God was a tract entitled, “The Fatal Resolution.” She then made choice of “the good part,” and sought and obtained an interest in the merits of the Saviour, and rejoiced in finding “the pearl of great price.” She immediately united with the Methodist church, and from that time until her death, a period of thirty-seven years her course was throughout one of entire Christian consistency, and of earnest desire for the glory of the Redeemer in the prosperity of His cause, Her last illness was one of five weeks continuance, during which she in patience possessed her soul, meekly submissive to the will of Her Heavenly Father, confiding in His love, and in the full assurance of the house not made with hands eternal in the heavens. She fell asleep in Jesus on the 2nd of October 1871, aged 52 years. BOND, Sarah Ann (I1497)

3574 Provincial Wesleyan - Wednesday, 29 May 1872 - Page 4 -Obituary -Mary, wife of Mr. James Shaffer, died at Lower Granville, August 8, 1871. Mrs. S. whose maiden name was Church, while yet a mere infant lost her father by death, after which she became the adopted child of Mr. William Clarke of Bridgetown at her marriage she removed to Lower Granville. In the year 1868, the village in which was her home, being then a part of the Annapolis circuit, she was awakened under a sermon by the writer, and soon after, having obtained a clear sense of pardon, she connected herself with the Wesleyan church. She was characterized by great sweetness of disposition, but was at the same remarkable for firmness of will, and unhesitating faithfulness in the performance of duty. She made her home attractive, for she looked well to the ways of her household, and was a most considerate hostess. Death came to her while yet in early womanhood and held to life by the care of her children still of tender age. Her disease (pulmonary consumption)induced unusual distress, and during her last hours, her sufferings were excruciating. But through Divine grace her afflictions were greatly sanctified to her spiritual health. When I came to the circuit I found her near her end, but sustained by an unfaltering trust in God her Saviour, and comforted by the tokens of his presence and favour. And thus sustained and comforted she passed through the agonies of dissolution and was not for God took her.J.H.Note - Her gravestone in Woodland Cemetery, Lequille, reads Shafner CHURCH, Mary Mehitable (I16113)

Mr. John C. Church of Belmont, Newport, son of the late Israel Church of Windsor, was for many years a person of unimpeachable conduct, but had remained a stranger to a satisfactory testimony of the pardoning love of God. During his last illness, he become increasingly anxious for the personal assurance of his acceptance through Christ. And although a reserved temperament of mind, he was able to evidence his assurance of the divine favour, and hopefully slept in Jesus, on the 9th of May 1872, in the 76th year of his age. O, how is it, that so many who desire salvation, are willing to rest short, of the redeeming Son of God?

3579 Quote from the will of his aunt Joan:
“I will, with the consent of Nicholas Warde, my brother, that a tenement at Skelton go to John Warde, son of Sir Roger Warde, deceased, after the death of the said Nicholas. So, this John Warde mentioned in Joan's will was a brother of Sir Christopher Warde. His aunt wanted to make sure her nephew received an inheritance of land in 'Skelton'. This would be Skelton-on-Ure which is right next to the original manor of Givendale.
