- Here, John is listed by his middle name 'De Meresque' and has French as his origin! Lists his place of birth as U.S. Occupation printer.
In the same household is his mother-in-law Susannah St. Luke, music teacher, and his second wife Mary Ann, also born in the U.S. As well as his 7 year old son John F. Ward
It could be that John was at work when the census was taken and the mixed up information was given by his mother-in-law who possibly didn't know John's personal details that well. Susannah was also a 'high society' type of person who perhaps thought John's middle name sounded more 'interesting' than John, and sounded 'French'... or possibly the census taker assumed it was French.
