- SANFORD, W.H. “Junior” – 68, Shubenacadie, passed away on April 3,2010 at home in Shubenacadie. Born December 21, 1941 in Union Corner, he was a son of the late Winfred and Amy Sanford. Junior received his early education at Windsor Academy and Hants West Rural High School. He went on to attend the Normal College in Truro where he obtained his teaching diploma. Junior valued life long learning and earned his Masters of Education at the University of Maine in 1989. In 1970, Junior began teaching at Hants East Rural High. During those years at Hants East, as both a math teacher and vice-principal, he touched many students’ lives. For Mr. Sanford teaching was a joy. After his retirement in 1996, he continued in the field of education, serving two terms as principal for small Christian schools in British Columbia. Junior loved sports. He played softball and coached both men’s and women’s teams in Shubenacadie for many years. Junior enjoyed the experience of driving across Canada with Barb. He took pleasure in the beauty of the land and in meeting new people. Over the years he enjoyed numerous trips to the New England States. There are many fond memories of vacations spent in Maine and New Hampshire as a young family. His most recent interests included woodworking and furniture restoration which he balanced with his passion for the church and his many related duties. Junior’s dogs were always a source of great enjoyment for him and he will be dearly missed by his current best friend Schroeder. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather and is survived by his wife of 46 years Barbara (McKinley); children Jennifer (Kempton), Martin (Sharon) and Lana (Simon); grandchildren Erica, Amy, and Kieran. Junior will be remembered as someone who was always there for his family. He was predeceased by his brother, Gerald Porter. Visitation will be held 2-4 and 6-8 pm, Sunday, April 11, 2010 in Faith Community Church, Hardwood Lands Road, Milford from where a memorial service will be held 2 pm, Monday, Pastor Paul Vanderkooi officiating.
