SWAMPING OF A BOAT - SIX MEN DROWNED
Auckland Star, Volume IX, Issue 2583, 18 July 1878, Page 3
The Maori, which arrived from the West Coast this morning, reports arriving at Big Bay on the morning of the 16th, where Fisher, a digger, reported that on the 13th June, when shooting along the beach to the northward, he found a tent and a blanket; about 5 miles up the harbour further on he found the dead body of a stranger. He returned to camp and obtained assistance, and at daylight next morning returned to the scene of the accident, and found the bodies of T. Andrew, H. Williams, and James Dalzell. He removed the bodies above high water mark, and reported the circumstances to Capt. Brently, Martains Bay. A search party was organised, and the bodies of Jeremiah Dalzell or Yell, and John Gabriel were found. They buried the bodies and made a further search, but without success. It appears that the deceased party had sailed from Jackson's Bay in an open boat, with a quantity of tools, deeply laden, and had been swamped on the reef outside Big Bay. Yell leaves a wife and four children, Gabriel a wife and family in Nova Scotia. Conspaki, whose body is not recovered, leaves a wife and large family. The stranger is supposed to be D. Branschon.
