- Leander Caldwell Falls From Wharf - Attempt at Rescue Fails.
Windsor, August 12 - All Windsor was excited to sympathy last evening for Charles and Mrs. Caldwell, when their little son, Leander, aged eight years, was accidentally drowned in the Avon River. The child was on the Wentworth wharf, playing with a chum named Roy Smith, where regular ferry boat Rotundas left about seven o'clock for down-the-river ports. The two boys were throwing stones into the water. Young Caldwell lost his balance and falling into the river, was soon out of sight. Smith ran along Water street giving the alarm.
Neil Sharpman, got into his bathing suit and dived several times from the wharf at the place, where young Caldwell fell iinto the river, hoping to recover the body.
Later, Charles Spencer, who owns a fishing boat, with his son went on the river dragging with grappling irons but could not locate the body. With the tide at flood it was believed that the body was carried up stream and might be located on the flats, when the tide had ebbed sufficiently to allow the men in the boats to work with the hope of success.
The wharf was filled with citizens for some hours and several boats were out on the river all trying to do something but no trace of the body could be found. Sunday morning another search was made and grappling irons were used but without avail.
