- BURCHELL, David George - 84, Bras d'Or, died January 30, 1994, at home. Born at Joggins Mines, Cumberland County, he was a son of the late George B. and Grace (Greenfield) Burchell. He came to Bras d'Or at an early age and attended Mount Allison University, later joining his father with the operation of the Bras d'Or Coal Company. For many years, he played a major role in coal research and development in conjunction with the Department of Energy, Mines and Resources in Ottawa and Nova Scotia. He introduced into Canada new coal mining machines and methods of mining. He was a life member and past president of the Canadian Institute of Mining and member of Mining Society of Nova Scotia, of which he was a recipient of the Scotia Medal. He was a lifetime member of the board of trustees of the Cape Breton Miners' Museum. He served as chairman of the Atlantic Provinces Transportation Commission. He was a prominent member of the Atlantic Provinces Chamber of Commerce; member of Nova Scotia Labour Relations Board for 30 years; past president of the Rotary Club of North Sydney; recipient of the Paul Harris Fellowship Award; former member of the Northern Yacht Club and the Halifax Club. He is survived by his wife, the former Margaret Kenna; sister, Genista (Mrs. Duncan MacAskill), Halifax; brother, Ralph, Bridgewater; several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by two brothers, Wilfred, Thomas. Cremation has taken place. A graveside committal service will be held at a later date in Lakeside Cemetery, North Sydney.
