FORMER POSTMISSTRESS of REETH
Death of Miss Margaret Ward
The death at Reeth Post Office of the former postmistress, Miss Margaret Ward, aged 73, recalls the family's long association with that post office. The work there has been carried on by members of the Ward family without a break since 1868. It was in that year that Miss Ward's father, Mr. Thomas Ward, was appointed postmaster and Miss Ward helped in the work from being a child. Reeth was one of the first offices in the area to have telegraph facilities. They were provided there in 1870 and Miss Ward learned the working of the system when she was about ten years old.
On her father's death in 1879 her brother, the late Mr. J.T. Ward, became postmaster and with the exception of about a year when another brother, the late Mr. Ralph Ward, was postmaster, he held the position until 1902. He resigned in that year and Miss Ward, who had been his assistant, was appointed postmistress. Whe she retired a year or two ago her nephew, Mr. T.E. Porter, became postmaster. Miss Ward is to be buried at Grinton tomorrow.
