- According to Edith Mosher's book North Along the Shore, "Avondale was one of the important ship-building centers in the 1800s. The Mosher shipyard was started by Nicholas Mosher, a member of the Provincial Parliament for the county of Hants for a number of years. Nicholas launched about five vessels a year from his yard. Avondale ships sailed all over the world and were known in every port for more than 100 years."
