- Most of the Whitells of this time period were in Bowes. The parish registers for Bowes don't start until 1674. That's why I cannot find a birth record for him. However, there was a John Whitell living at Scargill (between Bowes and Barningham) in the 1673 Hearth Tax Poll. I am pretty sure this must be Hugh's father. The fact that Hugh married Margaret Ward of Woodclose makes Scargill even more likely since they are only a couple of miles apart. Plus Margaret was buried in Barningham, 3 miles from Scargill.
